Seattle college programs and CPR/First Aid requirements

students contemplate which CPR class to take at CPR SeattleSummer is on the way out, school is starting, and your program director has just informed you that you can't start your training without CPR certification.

The problem is they didn't tell you what kind of certification you needed, and the deadline is looming. To help these situations, as well as prepare next year's students from suffering the same problems, we've complied a list of many of the CPR/First aid requirements for local college programs. We hope its useful and effective at clearing up the confusion. Please contact CPR Seattle with any corrections or updates.

Bellevue Community College  - Health Sciences, Education and Wellness

  • Health Sciences  courses taken at Bellevue Community College may require the BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification card. Contact program administrators with questions on requirements. Specific admission requirements include:
    • RN to BSN, AAS-T in Nursing, RN Refresher Program, Nursing Assistant - Certified   - “A copy of current CPR card for Healthcare Providers (BLS). The CPR card must be issued by a person or facility qualified specifically to instruct CPR for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association) that includes infant, child and adult.  Other types of CPR certification will NOT be accepted.”

North Seattle Community College

  • Nursing program requires the BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification card. American Heart Association card is specified.

South Seattle Community College

  • Nursing Programs (Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and Registered Nurse (RN)) require the BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification card.

Seattle Central Community College

  • Dental Hygiene: BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers and First Aid training is offered as a part of the program’s  first quarter class schedule.
  • Nursing: students must obtain a BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification before beginning the program and again before the fourth quarter (SCCC refers to it as “Healthcare Provider C course”.
  • Surgical Technology: BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers and First Aid training is required pre-enrollment; may be available through the college.

Everett Community College

  • Health Sciences and Nursing programs require a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers card. Note that if your card expires during the duration of your course with Everett Community College, you must renew in order to keep your certification current.

Shoreline Community College

  • Pre-nursing: requires BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification card. First Aid certification not required but contributes to Admission Points.
  • Phlebotomy: BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification listed as “preferred”.
  • Dental Hygiene: lists a requirement for “Healthcare Provider First Aid”.

Lake Washington Institute of Technology

  • Dental Assistant:
  • Dental Hygiene:
  • Massage practitioner: CPR (also requires HIV/AIDS training).
  • Nursing assistant: BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers. This program is required for those continuing on into practical nurse or registered nurse programs.

Edmonds Community College

  • Allied Health Education: for clinical externships, proof of completion for BLS or CPR (adult) within the last two years.

Green River Community College

  • Nursing : BLS equivalent is taught as part of the Nursing program.

Highline Community College

  • Associate of Pre-Nursing:  requires students to acquire the American Heart Association BLS/CPR for Healthcare certification during the program.

Olympic College (Bremerton)

Peninsula College (Port Angeles)

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): requires a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Nursing: requires a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification and will need to be renewed for the second year of the program.

Pierce College (Lakewood)

Seattle Vocational Institute

  • Most programs requiring CPR and/or First Aid include it as part of the school curriculum.

Skagit Community College

  • Most programs requiring CPR and/or First Aid include it as part of the school curriculum.

South Puget Sound Community College (Olympia)

  • Associate Degree in Nursing : All students must complete a Health Care Provider Card C (BLS/CPR for Health Care Providers). Must renew annually to meet clinical agreement requirements.
  • Certificate in Practical Nursing: All students must complete a Health Care Provider Card C (BLS/CPR for Health Care Providers). Must renew annually to meet clinical agreement requirements.
  • Nursing Assistant Certificate: All students must have a current CPR card before working with residents at the nursing home.
  • Medical Assisting: requires a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification prior to performing externship.

Clover Park Technical College (Lakewood)

Bellevue College

  • Nursing: requires a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.

Renton Technical College

Tacoma Community College

Whatcom Community College

  • Nursing: requires a current BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.
